Guidelines to help you choose and negotiate with an antique dealer.

The antiques industry is unique in many ways. Some dealers sell in established stores with regular hours, others sell from the back of their truck at flea markets and there are many levels in between. Merchandise available varies in age, quality and authenticity.

Education about antiques and learning to deal effectively with dealers are the keys to successful antique collecting and trading.

The purpose of this WWW server is to provide information about and images of antiques to people who are new to collecting. It does not deal with antiquities (very, very old and rare items), but with the types of items commonly purchased and sold at antique shows, auctions, flea markets and shops around the United States It is not intended as a comprehensive textbook, but as a primer to acquaint the unfamiliar with some things they might want to collect and learn about. Some excellent reference books are listed for those who wish to gain a more indepth knowledge of a particular type of antique.

These pages were created as a cooperative effort between the owners of Antiques Oronoco, Gordon and Yvonne Cariveau, and Yvonne Karsten (Co-owner of Internet Connections, Inc.).
